Manliness (2)

Manliness is not the strength of your muscle, but the care of those in your charge.
Word-Shop Goal: Develop a male character struggling with traditional fatherly traits.
“Be a man!” his mother shouted from the window, her voice laced with scorn. “Protect your sister!”
Down in the narrow courtyard, the bully mocked Rosie’s stutter, while cornering her against the wall. Towering over her and with fists clenched, he appeared to dare anyone nearby to step in.
Without acknowledging his mother’s demand, the smaller boy placed himself between Rosie and the bully. Meeting the other boy’s eyes, he murmured, “Let’s go, Rosie.” With his hand resting protectively on her shoulder, he gently led her inside.
