Promise to Love

A light tap on my knee
Distracted my glance
To where she suddenly appeared

Up on her hind legs
She braced against my thigh
And stared straight at me

With bulging brown eyes
She seemed to plead
For my grasp and a cuddle

In her unwavering gaze
My heart was opened
To forever love her

Through the years that passed
Her night-walk swagger
Affirmed I’d kept my promise

Until that last night
When her brown-eyes pleaded
For the breath I only failed her

Of her struggled stare
My heart was ripped apart
I lovingly closed her eyes
